Today the kitchen and dining room closets were removed. The rooms look so much bigger. Our guess about the date of the last renovation was about correct. On the wall of the closet in the dining room is pencil inscription:
Built by
(?? could be 2Lt) John J. Burns
NY (??)
Springtown Road
New Paltz
1934
We also found some old newspapers from behind the kitchen cabinets dated July 31st/ August 1 1936 which suggest that these were added at that time. This fits with with the timeline. The property was divided from over 100 acres in the early 30's and in 1934 and George and Jeanne Fiorentino purchased it. It is amazing to me (and a blessing) that there has been no major renovation to this house since then, meaning so many original features remain unharmed.
As well as the papers, the construction guys found a tiny silver (color, I'm sure it is made of tin) perfume bottle. The sort of thing you would put smelling salts in.
